Women IT Leaders: The Path, People, and Motivations

Executive leadership, especially in the insurance world, is often thought of as a distinctly male role. But there are women in power across all industries, and they are challenging assumptions and paving the way for younger women. Many of the women in insurance IT leadership roles got to where they are now via unique paths that bring unique perspectives.

Path

While some women have college degrees in computer science or IT, many others have liberal arts or business degrees. Many women are drawn to leadership and naturally step up or are selected for opportunities to lead, but the specific title of CIO is not necessarily the aim for all. Those who have worked in other industries earlier in their careers bring distinct experiences and perspectives to their roles in insurance, but they know that learning the business of insurance is a critical component to the success they deliver with their teams.

People

Many female leaders have role models and mentors to thank for providing positive influence, opportunity, and coaching while navigating the journey to traditionally male-dominated roles. The support of great leaders, bosses, or trusted colleagues can help women overcome the hurdles that they will inevitably face once they move into the business world.

Motivations

Each IT leader is motivated by many aspects of her job and contributions, but personal success is rarely the primary driver. Developing teams by challenging members with great potential, conveying the importance of IT’s work in the success of the overall company, and being able to take risks and constantly learn are all possible motivating factors and sources of inspiration. Additionally, creating a personal brand of leadership and working to communicate a vision can also be a driver.

Successful female leaders can balance the business world, the technical side of the organization, and personal relationships. To learn more about the journey to IT leadership for women in the industry, read Novarica’s latest report, Women in Insurance IT Leadership: Challenges and Opportunities.
