Women Leaders: Combatting Stereotypes and Overcoming Challenges

Leadership roles are increasingly demanding as carriers are repositioning themselves in the digital age. This means that technology is at the heart of transformation, and IT leaders bear significant responsibility to deliver successful results.

In addition to the challenges that all IT leaders are facing, women have a few additional hurdles to overcome. Unlike their male counterparts, women in the business world often struggle to defeat stereotypes, societal impressions of “feminine” vs. “masculine” traits, and the idea that assertive men are good employees while assertive women are difficult to deal with.

In addition to these misconceptions about female leaders’ abilities, it can often be difficult for women to gain the same kind of access as male leaders to informal relationship-building spheres like the golf course.

But the digital age is bringing many changes, and women in positions of power are adapting to keep up. Instead of taking golf lessons en masse, female leaders are providing innovative ideas that build up their professional credibility. Cultivating trustworthy relationships with mentors can also help women rise to power—this tactic can also help counter the perception of being a “difficult female.”
