The adoption of API-first application development at financial services and insurance organizations often goes hand in hand with the adoption of shift left methodology where security is integrated into the development process. Catching security gaps early through shift left efforts can enable the delivery of more secure APIs, but shift left should be considered complementary to, not a replacement for, shield right protection mechanisms. APIs are complex and it’s easy to make mistakes, particularly related to authorization and authentication. Even securely coded APIs are still susceptible to some form of attack.
