Canada Survey: Partnering in Technology and Services
Canadian asset management firms plan to continue investing in vendor-provided IT projects in 2011, particularly with regard to core infrastructure.
Boston, March 2, 2011 – A new report from Aite Group looks at trends and expectations of Canadian asset managers in their relationships with technology vendors and service providers, including broker/dealers and outsourcing firms. Based on in-person Aite Group interviews with Canadian asset managers in spring and summer 2010, this report follows Aite Group’s February 2011 report, Canadian Asset Managers: Ahead of the Curve, which provides details on the overall business and operations of Canadian asset managers.
While U.S. asset management firms clamped down on technology spending in 2009 and 2010, Canadian asset managers found themselves well positioned to continue with IT projects. Projects underway include trading, portfolio management and accounting systems, and client relationship and reporting platforms. Going forward into 2011, the majority of Canadian asset managers plan to continue investing in IT spending, typically utilizing third-party vendors. Further operational improvements will continue to initiate activity in data management, reporting, connectivity, and performance areas. All are critical to supporting compliance with new regulation and client requirements expected over the next several years.
“Canadian asset management firms have been able to capitalize on their ability to weather the financial crisis, investing in technology and infrastructure in anticipation of a global recovery and increasingly stringent regulatory environment,” says Denise Valentine, senior analyst with Aite Group and author of this report. “2011 is off to a good start for technology vendors selling in Canada as Canadian asset managers continue improvements in overall architecture and applications.”
