January 19, 2023 – As EMV chip cards continue to protect consumers and their in-store transactions against fraud, organized crime rings have turned their sights on e-commerce transactions where EMV chip cards do not provide protection. E-commerce merchants walk a tightrope trying to maximize revenue and deliver easy customer experiences while preventing fraud and minimizing losses. 3DS is one of the popular tools in their arsenal.

This report examines how U.S. e-commerce merchants leverage 3DS to fight online fraud. It is based on a quantitative phone survey of fraud and payments executives at 207 midsize and large U.S. e-commerce firms conducted in May 2022.
