The Internet of Things: An Information Explosion

Since the inception of the internet, there has not been a technical innovation as important as IoT, says Aite Group.

Boston, May 3, 2017 — Recent Aite Group research suggests that the next iteration of the internet will be the connection of billions of autonomous devices to the network. These devices will be gathering and transmitting information with no human intervention to platforms and systems that will distill the information into action, again, with no human intervention. The sheer size of this evolution by itself will be revolutionary, but the value that these connections create has the potential to change the way people live and the way companies operate around the world.

“IoT will impact nearly every aspect of commercial and social interaction, dramatically changing the way business is done and the way people live,” says Aite Group senior analyst Thad Peterson. “Every organization should understand the potential positive impact of IoT and should develop appropriate strategies to capitalize on the opportunity,” he says.

This Aite Group research report, The Internet of Things: An Information Explosion, is based on interviews and conversations with individuals from 15 organizations actively pursuing IoT solutions. The report dimensions IoT, defines the components that create it, describes the different commercial and consumer use cases, identifies issues and opportunities related to the impact of IoT on the payments ecosystem, and attempts to predict the evolutionary path that IoT may take.
