34%-55% of U.S. Banks and Credit Unions Will Support Digital Issuance by the End of 2024, Says Aite-Novarica Group

The push provisioning of a digital card offers higher card volume for the card issuer plus an improved cardholder experience

While cards are still more convenient for cardholders to use than other forms of payment, that could change if alternative digital payment methods (PayPal, RTP, and cryptocurrencies) are integrated into the mobile device for QR code or NFC payments. By removing the need to have a card in hand at the POS or manually enter card data online, push provisioning of a card removes most or all friction from adding cards to a mobile device or merchant website.

In a new report Payment Card Push Provisioning: A Straight Line to the Mobile Wallet and Merchant, research and advisory firm Aite-Novarica Group outlines digital issuance and push provisioning of a digital card, and why push provisioning adds value to issuers and cardholders. This report is based on Q3 and Q4 2021 interviews with seven push provisioning and digital card issuance solutions providers in the U.S. and abroad.

“Although it may be managed as one part of digital card issuance, push provisioning to a mobile wallet is not simply an extension of the digital card product,” said David Shipper, Strategic Advisor at Aite-Novarica Group and author of the new report. “Push provisioning is a stand-alone product that is key to keeping debit and credit cards relevant as payments become more mobile.”
